Chlorinated Koi Ponds Versus Koi Fish Ponds: Which One Is Easier To Maintain?

January 15, 2010  •  Category : Landscaping

Did you know that there are actually homeowners who prefer that their Koi pond not have any fish at all? How is this possible? Basically, instead of populating the Koi fish ponds with fish, they can simply be filled with chlorinated water. The fear that garden pond owners have when it comes to maintaining Koi fish ponds is the labour that goes along with actually taking care of the fish which is why they would rather have a Koi pond without Kois! But is this really a good decision? Here, we will take a look at the many reasons why homeowners should choose Koi fish ponds with actual fish in it, rather than maintaining a Koi pond sans the fish.

The Pros and Cons of Maintaining a Koi-Less Fish Pond

As mentioned earlier, there are homeowners who prefer to have a Koi fish pond or a garden pond without actual fish in it. This type of a system is usually interconnected with a swimming pool so its chlorinated water which will run through the Koi-less fish pond.

So what are the pros and cons of going for this type of a home garden pond setup? The good thing about it is that there will be no fish to feed so it would be less time-consuming in that regard.

The bad news is that there are a lot of disadvantages when you maintain a Koi-less fish pond. First of all, a garden pond which has chlorinated water in it is actually more of a burden to maintain as compared to a natural Koi fish pond. A pond without actual fish living in them would have a disrupted nitrogen cycle, which means that they are more difficult to maintain later on.

Second, a chlorinated garden pond will develop white stains in the path that the water runs through over time. If you dont regularly add chlorine to the water, algae and other decaying debris will grow, turning a pond which is supposed to be clear into a green, unsightly area which will ruin the look of your homes exterior.

How about the Maintenance Involved with Real Koi Fish Ponds?

Koi ponds with real fish, on the other hand, do not actually require that much work to maintain. Sure, you will need to feed the fish occasionally but the presence of the fish will not disrupt the natural nitrogen cycle within the pond.

The Verdict

All in all, theres actually no point in maintaining a Koi pond, a garden pond or any type of pond in your garden if there are no fish living in it anyway. When you have a Koi pond with fish, you might even learn a thing or two about being responsible pet owners and observe the Kois as they grow from small tadpole-like creatures into quite big fish which are a wonderful sight to take in when relaxing in your patio or garden.
