A Bengali wedding is an elaborate affair. It is strictly based on traditional Hindu rituals. These rituals are held on three separate days; half of which is performed by the bride's side and the other half by the groom's side. Together, a traditional Bengali marriage includes several pre wedding rituals, wedding rituals, and post wedding rituals.

BENGALI HINDU MARRIAGE

Important ceremonies of a Bengali Wedding:

Gaye Holud or Turmeric Paste Ceremony: This is a ceremony held before the wedding. A turmeric ceremony for the bride and one for the groom is held in their respective homes. The groom's family, barring the groom, carry the turmeric to the bride's home along with the bride's wedding dress, sweetmeats, two large fish and other gifts. The turmeric paste is applied to the bride's body by her friends. The same ceremony is also performed to the groom house with the groom bearing the brunt this time.

Wedding ceremony: The wedding ceremony which follows the turmeric paste ceremony is arranged by the bride's family. The important rituals of this ceremony is

Kanyadaan -: the ceremonial handing over of the bride by her father.

Saat Phera : Walking together around ceremonial fire seven times after the nuptial knot is tied.

After the wedding ceremony, which is usually held in the evening, relatives and friends remain awake along with the bride and the groom for the entire night. This is called the Basor Raat. The next day, the groom sets out along with the bride to his home. Traditionally, the fathers claim over his daughter is over on this day.

The next day a reception, popularly known as the "Bou Bhat" is arranged by the groom's side. It is an easy going ceremony where the bride is introduced to all the grooms acquaintances. The night is celebrated as the "Phool Sojja Raat" or the night of flowers. The marriage bed of the Bengali bride and groom is decorated with flowers, as a mark of wishes for consummation.

BENGALI MUSLIM MARRIAGE

Bengali Muslim marriages are less elaborate and more relaxing. The groom and bride are made to sit separately. A kazi or solemnizing head, along with the parents and a witness from either side asks the bride for her consent to the marriage. After a confirmation the groom has to give his consent. A party is arranged by the groom's family and consummation takes place the same night.
