What is a vaginal yeast infection?


It is an infection of the vagina caused by an overgrowth of fungus (yeast) called Candida albicans. Yeast generally exists in the vagina at normal levels but when too much yeast grows it develops into an infection. Most women are affected with yeast infection at least once in their lifetimes. For many who do not receive the correct treatment that addresses the real cause of the infection, are hit several times with a yeast infection.

What are the symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection?

It could be a combination of any of the following: Itching in and around the vagina, burning, redness and swelling of the vulva (the area around the vagina). Pain during urination, during sexual intercourse and a thick, white cheese like discharge which is odourless.
